Carol, in Profile
A few things you won’t find on my résumé.
Home: Hawaiʻi Island. The moment I stepped off the plane on my first visit, I recognized home.
Since Arriving: A student of Hawaiian culture, history, and language since my first visit — and still learning.
Earlier Chapters: Systems engineer, technology project and program manager, entrepreneur, and executive consultant helping define and market a leading office automation platform. Early in my engineering career, I lived and worked for two years in what was then West Germany.
Aspirational Self: Ayla, from Jean M. Auel's Earth's Children novels. A girl left alone who learns to survive, then thrive, then triumph in a beautiful but sometimes hostile world. She builds on the knowledge of healing plants and useful resources passed down by the woman who raised her, taking that learning further through observation, innovation, and practical application. Along the way, she befriends animals and people alike, expands her options, and continually improves her life.
In My Glass: Chianti or Champagne.
Family Historian: As my family’s genealogist, I’ve discovered and documented three ancestors who fought in the American Revolution. This establishes a lineage that female descendants of my paternal grandmother can use to apply for DAR membership by documenting their connection to her.
Enduring Interests: Typography, page layout, readability, comprehension and the experience of the person using a website or reading a page.
Health and Healing: Herbalism and aromatherapy since the mid-1980s, alongside a lifelong study of health, nutrition, and healing. My studies have included neuromuscular therapy and Autonomic Response Testing (ART), with training from Dietrich Klinghardt, MD, PhD. At the request of friends and family, I make essential oil formulations, suggest supplements and therapies, and provide muscle testing and bodywork. I practice yoga daily.
Known at Home As: Carol supPorter — my husband’s nickname for me. I’m naturally inclined to help others. He has supported me in opening our home to people who needed a place to stay and put up with more than a few of my other rescue missions. I’ve also built dozens of websites at no charge for people who couldn’t afford the help or wanted someone they trusted. I continue to help people learn technology.
Other Fascinations: Technology, nature, natural beauty, travel, sacred places, human behavior, and tarot explored through a Jungian lens.
Design Interests: Architecture, art, interiors, and fashion — subjects I've studied informally since my teenage years. “Design Matters” in every aspect of our lives.
At Home: A collection built over decades: mid-century modern furniture, antiques, custom-made pieces, Chinese antique furniture, and art—including works by Hawaiʻi artists.
In the Kitchen: I love food from around the world. My husband and I enjoy preparing Persian, Indian, Lebanese, Japanese, Chinese, Thai, and Italian dishes.
Languages: Once conversationally fluent in French, German, and Spanish. Rusty now.
Miles Traveled: 887,630 miles recorded in TripIt since 2011—and counting.
As of October 2026; not nearly a lifetime total.
Fashion, Then: In the 1980s, working in a nearly all-male engineering environment, I wore serious power dresses or bespoke wool skirt suits from a Boston tailor who specialized in men’s suits. With the suits, I wore crisp white cotton shirts with narrow, square-ended silk neckties, or silk blouses in jewel tones. Later, in the dot-com years, tunics and leggings became my daily uniform; the corporate wardrobe came out for important meetings.
Fashion, Now: Solid-color sleeveless Eileen Fisher dresses comprise my daily work uniform; mix-and-match Eileen Fisher separates are for travel. My collectible wardrobe includes Janice Wainwright, Alexander McQueen, Chanel, Isabel Marant, and vintage pieces from my mom and Aunt Eleanor. Much of it gets little wear in Hawaiʻi, where Inizio dresses and an abundance of Jams World have found their way into my wardrobe.
Places That Stay With Me: Avebury, Stonehenge, the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian on Patmos, and many cathedrals, churches, temples, and mosques.
