The coffee belt’s heart
Much of the Kona coffee belt falls in South Kona: farms step up the slopes of Hualālai and Mauna Loa, with farms and orchards around Hōnaunau, Kealakekua, and Captain Cook. Hawaiʻi is the only U.S. state that grows coffee commercially, and 100% Kona is a small-batch Arabica crop.

Kealakekua Bay
A marine life conservation district and the historic first landfall: Captain James Cook came ashore here in 1779 and died on its shore weeks later. The white obelisk monument at the water’s edge is reached by kayak, by a boat from the nearest harbor, or by a steep hillside trail. The monument stands on a tiny parcel that is technically U.K. sovereign territory, a relic of the 1877 deed from the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi.

The Place of Refuge
Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park preserves the ancient walled puʻuhonua where people who fled conflict or broke a kapu could find sanctuary. Green sea turtles rest along its shore, and the protected bay keeps the water calm.

Upcountry character
Unlike North Kona’s town coast, most of South Kona runs along the highway above the shore, so elevation sets the daily reality: cooler and wetter air, catchment and water systems, and roads that wind from valley to valley. A property’s character is decided by exactly where along the slope it sits.

Lava zones: where the district differs
South Kona's hazard zones run mostly Lava Zone 3, with areas of Zone 2 along the volcanic slopes. Because the zone changes with elevation, a parcel's TMK should be checked against the hazard map before you commit.

The drive and the services
South Kona offers local shopping for groceries and hardware, and is home to Kona Community Hospital. The Choice Mart grocery store and Ace Hardware are well visited South Kona destinations. However, residents must drive to Kailua-Kona for the big box stores and some specialized services. Buyers who plan trips and like independence take this in stride, but factor in the distances to regularly visited destinations.
