The coast in one read

From Kūkiʻo to Kohala Ranch, with two towns serving the whole shoreline.

The coast runs from Kūkiʻo at the south to Kohala Ranch at the north. Two places serve the whole shoreline: Waikoloa Village, just above the middle of the coast, is the more affordable residential option, a real town rather than a resort; and Waimea, upcountry, is the hub for shopping, services, and medical care. Most things you need are a drive from anywhere on the coast, and these two towns are why that works.

The character of the coast is straightforward: a resort coast with white-sand beaches and golf, set between dry lava fields and the green upcountry. Microclimates change with elevation, from the hot, dry shoreline to the cooler ranch country above. One honest note: this is a resort coast. Homes are permitted, many have solar panels, and almost all are on the grid. The off-grid story on this island belongs to Puna and Kaʻū, and I cover those districts in the journal.
